Rugby is a physical but safe contact sport where player welfare is the most important thing. Whether you are a newbie, a veteran, a serious athlete or just want to play for fun, there is a form of Rugby for you in British Columbia. Use this section to learn how to register and play Rugby in BC:
BC RUGBY REGISTRATION
To play Rugby in Canada, you need to be registered. Registration is important – if you are not registered, you don’t have insurance.
Once you are a registered Member, you become insured and covered under Rugby Canada’s Insurance Policy for the season. This includes Sports Liability Insurance, Sport Accident Insurance, Provincial Excess Medical Coverage, and Travel Coverage while on sanctioned Tours.
To access insurance, every individual must register for Membership with a Club. Insurance is valid starting from August 1 of a new season and is activated from the Member’s date of purchase and expires on August 31 of the following year. As a Member, if you have multiple roles with your club (player, Coach, manager, etc.), you must be registered in all these categories to be insured for those activities.
BC Rugby Membership is available to any resident of BC. Through Membership, we continue to grow, develop, and manage Rugby by offering programs for all ages and skill levels (recreational to High-Performance), educational opportunities and access to exclusive benefits and services.
You can register as a New Member or Returning Member – follow the relevant steps below:
New Members
BC Rugby offers a place for everyone to get involved. Whether you play, coach, or just love the Club atmosphere on game days, there are endless ways for you to join the game. To get started, register with BC Rugby or with one of our Member Clubs.
Step 1: Click the ‘Register’ button below.
Step 2: Select BC Rugby as your province.
Step 3: All Sanctioned BC Rugby Member Clubs will then appear in a list. Click on the Club that is best for you.
Step 4: All Membership options for that Club will appear underneath – select the option best for you.
Step 5: Click ‘Register’ and follow the steps to create a SportLomo account. You will then be able to complete your Registration!
Returning Members
If you participated in the previous season as a player, coach, official, or volunteer, log in to your SportLomo account to renew your Membership for the new season.
If you are unsure whether you have an account, contact the BC Rugby Office to avoid duplicate profiles in the system.
WHAT RUGBY IS RIGHT FOR ME?
BC Rugby wants to ensure you play in the right environment, so we break the sport down into groups by age. Once you know the grouping you are looking for, you can search for a local club or venue in your area that provides that level of Rugby.
For 2023/34 Age-Grade Rugby, the Age-Grade bandings are U14, U16 and U18 across all Boys and Girls Programs and Divisions.
Mini – Ages 5-12
Our young athletes play a variation of rugby called Rookie Rugby. Rookie Rugby is a fun, safe version of the sport allowing players to learn the Laws of the Game without any bumps or bruises.
Based on the current Age-Grade Law Variations, players between the ages of 5-10 will play non-contact.
Players aged 10-12 can begin the transition to tackle (contact Rugby) based on comfort level.
Age Grade – Ages 13-18
Many of Canada’s best players were already in high school when they picked up a Rugby ball for the first time. Whether you want to play socially, become an Olympian, or somewhere in the middle, the sport of Rugby offers a world of opportunity.
The 2022/23 BC Rugby Age-Grade Bandings for all Boys and Girls Programs/Divisions are as follows:
- U14
- U16
- U18

Senior – Ages 19+
Whether you are new to BC or new to the sport, we want to get you onto the field. In BC, you will have the opportunity to participate in full contact competitive leagues and non-contact social Rugby, operated by individual Clubs.
Masters – Ages 35+
Masters Rugby Programs are offered at numerous Member Clubs throughout British Columbia. Masters Rugby is traditionally played by people over 35 years old.
