BC Rugby is delighted to announce the Northern and Interior schedule for the upcoming Summer Season, featuring exciting Rugby matches from Clubs across BC’s Northern, Okanagan, and Kootenay regions.
This season promises to be a showcase of skill and athleticism, with both Men’s and Women’s teams battling it out to compete at the 2023 Saratoga Cup.
Starting on April 29, the Northern/Interior Summer Season Schedule is divided across three regions – Central Interior Rugby, the Okanagan Rugby Union and the Kootenays – and features nine Clubs.
PASSIONATE RUGBY COMMUNITIES
Contrary to the Island and Lower Mainland Rugby communities, these regions play their Rugby during the summer months on account of the challenging winter weather that they experience between Fall and Spring. However, this adapted Rugby schedule does nothing to diminish the players’ passion and enthusiasm for the sport, with Club roots and traditions running deep in these communities. To play in these leagues, teams can travel over 10 hours across the province to face their rivals, which perfectly encapsulates the passion, dedication and commitment shown by Clubs and players alike.
The season will culminate at the annual Saratoga Cup event on August 26-27, hosted in Cranbrook, BC, and will feature both Men’s and Women’s competitions for the second successive year. This highly-anticipated event brings together the top Men’s and Women’s teams from across these regions, and remains one of the most enjoyable Rugby weekends in the BC Rugby calendar.
“The Summer Season is always an exciting time for Rugby in BC. We’re thrilled to be bringing together some of the top Clubs from across Northern and Interior BC, and we can’t wait to see the incredible Rugby action that they will deliver.” BC Rugby CEO David Newson
With the Saratoga Cup on the line, the stakes are high for every team participating this summer season. Fans can expect to see intense rivalries, thrilling finishes, and some of the most competitive Rugby action in the province, with each team looking to prove themselves as the best in their respective divisions.
Teams from Prince George RFC, Prince Rupert Seamen, Williams Lake Rustlers and Terrace Northmen RFC will contest the Central Interior Rugby division, while Vernon RFC, Penticton Harlequins and Salmon Arm Yeti will play out the Okanagan Division.
The reigning Saratoga Cup Men’s Champions Rocky Mountain Rogues, who lifted the Championship in both 2021 and 2022, will battle it out against Elk Valley RFC for the Kootenay Cup.
The full schedule for the Summer Season can be found below and on the BC Rugby website, with matches taking place between April and August.
