BC Rugby Board and BC Rugby Committee Vacancies

BC Rugby is currently recruiting Directors of the Board and member for Board Committees, commencing June 25, 2022. Board member terms are two-years, while committee appointments are done annually.

These are exciting and critical times for our sport. While we have weathered the pandemic as well as could be hoped, we now need renewed purpose and vigour to be better than ever before. We all bear responsibility to ensure everyone is welcomed and respected in our sport, and to provide an environment where safety is paramount. BC Rugby will be working diligently to lead by example and provide appropriate resources and support to our Clubs and community partners. The ultimate success of plan depends on connected, collaborative, and complimentary efforts undertaken throughout the rugby community. We look forward to working with you to achieve that success.

In addition to the requirements and attributes described in the Bylaws (section 6.2), the BC Rugby Governance Committee has identified the following attributes that would be desirable to add to the Board complement, given the Strategic Initiatives needing the attention of the Board:

  • Skills & Experience – professional expertise in Information technology; Human Resources; Philanthropic and non-profit fundraising; Education sector; Banking and Finance; Canadian and/or British Columbia Law.
  • Diversity:
    • With respect to ethnicity, age and disability, increasing the diversity of the Board to be more reflective of BC Rugby’s current and potential membership
    • In addition, continued gender diversity is critical and given current and future turnover on the Board, the appointment of non-male board members to maintain the diversity of the Board is an important priority.
  • Indigenous representation

Subject to BC’s Societies Act and the BC Rugby Bylaws, the Board is responsible for defining the Strategic Vision and Goals for the organization, delegating authority to staff and committees, verifying operational and financial performance, and adhering to legal requirements, to ensure organizational success and accountability. As such, the Directors of the Board are required to undertake the following responsibilities and tasks:

  • Attendance at Meetings & Representing BC Rugby:
    • The Board meets between 6 to 8 times a year
    • Two Board Meetings will be full-day, in-person meetings held on a weekend day, while the remainder will typically take place on weekday evenings for 2-3hrs via teleconference
    • Directors are expected to participate in meetings, having reviewed the provided meeting materials in advance
    • Directors are also expected to attend key events, as logistically feasible
  • Service on Board Committees:
    • Each Director is expected to serve on one of four Board standing committees (Governance, Finance, Safe Sport and Stakeholders)
    • Board Committees schedule their meetings around Board meetings and are exclusively held via teleconference

Directors of the Board are not remunerated. BC Rugby covers the cost of travel to attend in-person Board meetings and key events with the Directors’ presence is requested. BC Rugby allocates budget to support the Directors of the Board’s professional development to best serve their collective responsibilities to the organization.
