2024 KOOTENAY CUP
The sun has been shining on Rugby in the Kootenays this season as the Elk Valley Bulls and Rocky Mountain Rogues continue to grow the sport throughout the region.
Elk Valley kicked off the season hosting Rucking in the Rockies in Fernie, a fantastic festival of Rugby in the Kootenay sunshine. Fun was had on and off the field by all ages, with over 50 children aged 2-12 turning out for their first Rookie Rugby session of the Summer Season.
The event featured Men’s and Women’s Teams from Elk Valley Bulls, Rocky Mountain Rogues and two Alberta teams, with the Rogues eventually lifting the Men’s trophy. BC Rugby Officials Development Manager Chris Assmus was also in attendance, having delivered a Level 1 Officiating Course in Fernie two weeks’ earlier, to officiate the event and share his knowledge with local Clubs!
Kudos to tournament organiser Lavinia McElwee and the Elk Valley RFC executive team for putting on a tremendous event!
Both Elk Valley and the Rocky Mountain Rogues met for the respective Men’s and Women’s season openers on May 25. The Rogues Women’s Team defeated the Bulls 27-5, while the Men’s teams played out a thrilling 20-20 draw.
