BC Rugby’s 2024 Provincial Regional Championships (PRCs) concluded on Sunday following a festival-like weekend of Rugby at UBC’s Gerald McGavin Centre, with four Championships heading back to Vancouver Island and two to the Fraser Valley.
The Vancouver Island Junior Tide won the U14 Boys, U14 Girls and U18 Boys Divisions, while Fraser Valley West were declared U18 Girls Champions and Fraser Valley East won the U16 Boys Championship. The North Vancouver Island Tsunami won the U16 Girls gold medal.
Taking place on the traditional, ancestral, and unceded territory of the xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam) First Nation, the popular tournament made its return and featured 43 teams, 600 athletes and seven regions vying for glory across six divisions.
Teams from the Vancouver Rugby Union (VRU), Vancouver Island Junior Tide (VIRU Tide), North Vancouver Island Rugby Union (NVIRU Tsunami), Fraser Valley Rugby Union (FVRU), Thompson-Okanagan Rugby Alliance (TORA), Kootenays Rugby Union (KRU) and Aurora Wolves Rugby Union (The North) competed 117 games in front of 2,500 spectators throughout July 5-7.
The weekend also saw the Rugby community rally together on Crazy Socks for ALS Day on July 6, a campaign launched by BC Rugby and the ALS Society of BC to raise awareness and vital funds for the ALS community. Attendees were asked to wear their craziest pair of socks on the Saturday of PRCs, with many unique designs on display! Funds will be used towards purchasing a Travel Buggy Power Chair for ALS BC’s Equipment Loan Program. More information about the campaign can be found here.
For emerging Rugby players, the 2024 PRCs presented a perfect opportunity to impress the watching BC Rugby Age-Grade Team Coaches and make a late bid for selection to the BC Bears Provincial U16 and U18 Representative teams in action this summer.
BC Rugby will be releasing the 2024 PRCs Photo Gallery and Match Videos later this week – keep your eyes peeled on our social media channels!
