Canada claimed an incredible Olympic silver medal in the Women’s Rugby Sevens, the nation’s best-ever result in the event, following a fantastic run at the 2024 Paris Olympics in France.
In Tuesday’s gold-medal Final, Canada narrowly missed out to New Zealand in a 19-12 defeat at the Stade de France. Earlier on Tuesday, Canada stunned favourites Australia 21-12 in the semi-final, a day after they claimed a shock upset over hosts France in the quarter-finals.
Risi Pouri-Lane scored the opening try in Tuesday’s Final and converted to give New Zealand a 7-0 lead in the opening few minutes. However, New Zealand were reduced to six after Charity Williams drew the foul and yellow card to Portia Woodman-Wickliffe.
Canada took full advantage of the extra athlete as Chloe Daniels levelled the score, converting her own try. Alysha Corrigan’s key interception led to a second Canada try in the final play of the first half, as Canada led 12-7.
However, New Zealand responded quickly after the restart with Michaela Blyde’s try and Tyla King’s conversion to move 14-12 ahead. Despite great pressure from Canada, Stacey Waaka broke free in the final moments to seal victory.
New Zealand were the only team to beat Canada across the tournament, having also won on Day 2 in the Pool A clash. Canada finishes its Paris campaign with wins against Fiji, China, France (quarter-finals) and Australia (semi-finals).
Canada’s previous best at the Olympics was a bronze medal finish at Rio 2016, while the team finished ninth at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics.
