INCREASING YOUTH PARTICIPATION IN RUGBY
“We want to help increase youth sport participation, expose more people to rugby in the Greater Victoria region, and inspire the next generation of Olympians,” said Ryan Jones, Rugby Canada Rugby Development Manager. “The Paris 2024 Qualification Event in Langford presents an opportunity to do this in close proximity to role models who are actively pursuing excellence on the world stage. We hope that by giving these youth a glimpse into their journey, they will fall in love with the sport and recognize rugby as a sport for life.”
The Rugby Sevens Paris 2024 Qualification Event is a rare direct qualification event for Paris 2024 held in Canada, the only one scheduled to take place on home soil in 2023 so far. All summer camp attendees will receive two complementary passes to attend this tournament, as well as a bundle of Rugby Canada merchandise.
“Coaching Rugby has given me the privilege of sharing my passion and knowledge with the next generation of great rugby players,” said Piper Logan, a member of Canada’s Women’s Sevens Team who has also coached children and youth in BC. “There is something so special about being able to watch them fall in love with the game in the same ways I did as a young athlete, and I hope that camps like these can inspire them to continue growing their game to their fullest potential.”
Rugby Canada will also be offering a leadership camp for youth ages 14 to 18. Camp attendees will complete three coaching clinics and a series of online courses before coaching alongside the national team players who will help lead the summer camp—building up and empowering the leaders of tomorrow. Registration for the leadership camp will open soon.
