BC Rugby is proud to announce Cowichan RFC’s Sherry Spence as the recipient of the 2024 Joan Spray Award, which recognizes an individual whose selfless dedication in a voluntary supporting role contributes to the growth, development, and enjoyment of Rugby in BC.
Sherry’s outstanding contributions to Rugby in British Columbia will be celebrated at the 2024 BC Rugby Hall of Fame Gala Dinner at the ARRAS Vancouver on Friday, October 11, 2024.
A DEDICATED ASSET TO OUR COMMUNITY
A dedicated leader in the rugby community, Sherry Spence has made a significant impact on the development of rugby at both the grassroots and competitive levels.
Her work as a player, coach, mentor, and leader within the sport has inspired countless players and coaches alike. Spence has been instrumental in promoting rugby programs for young athletes across BC, particularly at her beloved Cowichan RFC and for the North Vancouver Island Tsunami, helping to grow the sport and create opportunities for the next generation of athletes.
Sherry was a member of the first Women’s Rugby team at Cowichan Rugby Club, where she is still a current player, and has been a Member at Cowichan for 23 years!
She has dedicated countless hours as a Coach and has helped shaped the future of junior Rugby on Vancouver Island.
Sherry has coached Cowichan RFC’s U16 and U18 Girls for 10 years, as well as coaching Cowichan Secondary School’s Junior and Senior Girls Programs for eight years. She has also coached the North Vancouver Island Tsunami Junior Girls for 10 years, and has been named as a BC Bears Girls XVs Coach the past two years. Sherry also coaches with the MacDowell Rugby Academy.
She has sat on the Cowichan RFC Senior Executive Board for 20 years, and spent five years as Cowichan RFC Junior President and the North Vancouver Island Tsunami President.
To this day, Sherry continues to have a profound effect on Rugby in BC!
