Good luck to BC representatives Vancouver Thunderbirds (UBC) and University of Victoria Vikes as they prepare for the 2024 Canada West Rugby season!
Canada West Rugby is back with a bang this Fall, as the conference’s 14-game slate is scheduled to begin in late August.
The Thunderbirds enter the season looking for a Canada West five-peat, a feat not seen since Lethbridge captured six straight conference crowns from 2006-11. The T-Birds went a perfect 5-0 during last year’s regular season, eventually defeating the Vikes 10-0 in a hard fought CW gold medal game.
ROAD TO THE NATIONALS
A pair of Alberta rivals will kick things off as the Calgary Dinos visit the Alberta Pandas on August 30. The schedule hits high gear the following week with the Vikes hosting UBC on September 7 in a highly anticipated rematch of last year’s Canada West Final. Lethbridge also opens their season that day, hosting the Pandas at Community Sports Stadium.
Extending the dynasty will be far from easy for the Thunderbirds, with three hungry Alberta rivals and a Victoria squad coming off a magical run at last year’s U SPORTS Championships, where they earned a national silver medal. The Vikes made their first U SPORTS Championship final appearance in program history after stunning top seeded Ottawa in the quarter-finals before blanking Guelph in the semis, eventually falling to host Université Laval in the final.
No Canada West team has won a National Title since Alberta in 2013, something the Thunderbirds and Vikes will be hoping to end this season.
Regular season action continues through October 12, with Lethbridge hosting Calgary in the regular season finale. The Dinos will then host the 2024 Canada West Championships in Calgary, with semi-final action on October 17 and the bronze/gold medal games set for October 20.
The 2024 U SPORTS National Championships are headed to the east coast, to be hosted by UPEI in Charlottetown, PEI from October 30 to November 3.
