The 2022 BC Rugby Women’s Premier League Final will see the division’s top two seeds, Vancouver Thunderbirds and Castaway Wanderers, battle it out for the Gordon Harris Memorial Cup on May 7.
Thunderbirds and Castaway Wanderers are the first teams to confirm their places at the 2022 BC Rugby Senior Club Finals, taking place at South Surrey Athletic Park – home of Bayside Sharks RFC – on Saturday May 7. The season-ending Finals return to the calendar for the first time since 2019.
Top seeds Vancouver Thunderbirds were handed a bye to the final after scheduled semi-final opponents Westshore RFC withdrew.
#2-ranked Castaway Wanderers defeated #3 seeds and 2019 champions Capilano RFC to book their spot in the final, edging a tightly fought semi-final 42-36 at Windsor Park.
Thunderbirds and Castaway Primed For Electric Final
Vancouver Thunderbirds and Castaway Wanderers will be vying for the Gordon Harris Memorial Cup which was first (unofficially) awarded to the Jericho Old Girls in 1982. The first official winners were Simon Fraser University in 1984.
This year’s final is perfectly poised with both sides having enjoyed one victory each in their two regular season matches against each other.
Wanderers secured a 53-17 victory over the Thunderbirds at Windsor Park in Week 2 of the season, before the Thunderbirds responded with a 67-21 win at Gerald McGavin Centre in March.
“We have been training hard all year long and are feeling good going into our program’s first ever Premier League final. Our team has figured out our groove and are now able to play off each other’s strengths! All our players offer their own skills that compliment each other perfectly. We are really excited and hoping to cap off the season with a win!” Vancouver Thunderbirds captain Alayna Scramstad
““We’re so incredibly excited to get to the finals, and I was really humbled watching my team today. We definitely showed up in the second half and showed what we are made of. It’s been a long time without Rugby and it is great to be back. We’ll use the energy from our win over Capilano in training over the next two weeks and prepare for what will be a tough match against Vancouver Thunderbirds. We’ll look to do what we did in the first game against them this season and give it our best.” Castaway Wanderers Senior Women’s Captain Louise Ericksson
