BC Rugby is delighted to announce 20 girls enjoyed the free Girls Can Rugby tryout held by Elk Valley RFC in Fernie, taking the total number of sign-ups for the initiative to 650 throughout the province.
The future of girls Rugby in the East Kootenays is looking bright after girls aged 10-18 learned about Rugby in glorious sunshine at Prentice Park.
While over 600 girls at 17 BC Rugby Clubs from Campbell River to Fort St John enjoyed Girls Can Rugby Days on March 6 this year, the Elk Valley RFC event took place on Saturday April 23 to allow for snow to melt in the area.
Save on Foods Fernie kindly donated all the food and drinks for a BBQ held after the event.
“Thank you to all the coaches and other Elk Valley Rugby Football Club members who helped make this day a success, with set up, BBQing, coaching, and all the pre-planning. Most importantly, thank you to the girls and their families who joined us; events like these don’t happen without you! The future of rugby in the Elk Valley is looking bright!” Elk Valley RFC on Instagram
Girls Can Rugby: The Initiative
Girls Can Rugby is a province-wide initiative launched by BC Rugby aimed at inspiring more girls to play Rugby in a positive and enjoyable environment at local Clubs throughout BC.
Coinciding with International Women’s Day this year, BC Rugby Clubs from Campbell River to Fort St John hosted a Girls Can Rugby Day – a free tryout welcoming all girls aged 5-14 – that was enjoyed by 650 girls!
In the year of the Women’s Rugby World Cup, we want to see more girls under the age of 14 playing Rugby in a positive environment at Clubs in the province. This age range is traditionally dominated by male players, and we aim to readdress this balance and encourage more girls-only programming offered by Clubs going forward.
BC Rugby gratefully acknowledges the financial support of the Province of British Columbia through the Ministry of Tourism, Arts, Culture and Sport in helping launch the Girls Can Rugby initiative.
