Rugby is blossoming in the Kootenays with Elk Valley RFC and the Rocky Mountain Rogues coming together to help grow the game.
Over 40 kids turned out across two Try Rugby sessions hosted by Elk Valley RFC on May 6 and May 7 in Fernie and Sparwood. The goal of the sessions was to encourage school-aged children try the sport and sign-up to the local high school programs or Rookie Rugby program at the Club.
With good weather and strong local support from the two local Save-On Foods stores, the sessions proved to be a popular hit with many kids registering on the spot! A huge shoutout to all those involved in making the weekend a big success, including the senior players who turned up to help coach.
Then, on May 13, Elk Valley RFC hosted its annual “Rucking in the Rockies” event alongside the Rocky Mountain Rogues – and this year’s edition was a real community Rugby Day!
The day kicked off with some Rookie Rugby in the morning, followed by the Kootenay Cup men’s fixture between Elk Valley RFC and the Rocky Mountain Rogues. The two Clubs then contested their first Women’s game for five years – a testament to all the hard work being put in to help grow the game in the Kootenays.
The day wrapped up with some skills competitions, with lots of prizes donated by local sponsors, a tug of war, and flag Rugby for any ages and genders to play in. Lots of families got involved and stayed all day to enjoy the BBQ and beer garden put on by Elk Valley RFC.
