UBC Thunderbirds claimed bronze at the 2024 Canadian University Men’s Rugby Championships in Ottawa, while UVIC Vikes finished fifth and UBCO Heat took sixth place in its maiden CUMRC appearance.
No. 1-seeded Thunderbirds advanced to the Semi-Finals following a 104-0 shutout win over UBCO Heat, before the Vancouver-based team suffered a shock 22-21 defeat to the No. 5-seeded eventual champions ETS Piranahs(Montreal).
Thunderbirds bounced back to defeat Guelph Gryphons 47-40 to clinch the bronze medal at the University of Ottawa.
Meanwhile, No. 3-seeded Vikes narrowly missed out on a Semi-Final berth following a 26-24 Quarter-Final loss to No. 6-ranked Queen’s Gaels.
The Vikes responded with a 35-31 win over hosts, Ottawa Gee Gees, in the Consolation Semi-Final to set up Fifth-Place Playoff against No. 8 -ranked UBCO Heat, who shocked the No. 4-seeded Memorial Sea Hawks 20-17 in their Consolation Semi-Final.
The Vikes ran through 59-7 winners against the Heat to claim fifth place, with the Heat – who claimed the Prairie University Championship with an undefeated season – settling for Sixth Place on its CUMRC debut.
