The return of the Ruth Hellerud-Brown Cup comes at a moment of historic momentum for women’s rugby in Canada. Following the Canadian Senior Women’s National Team’s inspirational run to the 2025 Rugby World Cup Final, interest and participation in women’s rugby is peaking in BC.

The competition is designed to showcase BC’s best Senior Women’s talent, with each regional team representing a distinct geographic area and club network. Athletes will have the opportunity to compete in a high-performance environment that bridges the gap between regional and national-level play, while also providing selectors with an enhanced view of the province’s top athletes.

The Ruth Hellerud-Brown Cup will serve as a key component of BC Rugby’s performance pathway, aligning with Rugby Canada’s national talent development framework. The goal is to ensure that BC continues to produce the world-class athletes who drive Canada’s international success both now and in the future.

BC Rugby’s Technical Director, John Tait, emphasized the long-term impact of the competition: “The return of the Ruth Hellerud-Brown Cup will strengthen the foundation of women’s rugby in BC and help ensure that the next generation of Canadian internationals comes from right here in our province,” said Tait.

Vancouver Island Tide President, Jen Ross, said: “The Crimson Tide have long awaited the return of the Ruth Hellerud-Brown Cup competition and see it as an opportunity to showcase the talent within our Club system-  affording overlooked and up-and-coming young talent an opportunity to be seen on a higher stage.”

Vancouver Wave Coach, Demi Stamatakis, said: “I remember playing in the Ruth Hellerud-Brown cup as a young athlete for the Vancouver Wave. It was the highlight of my rugby season and an opportunity to bond with other club players across the province; reaching for greatness together. I can’t wait to provide the same opportunity for the next generation of athletes, and I’m excited to see what club athletes come out to compete.”

Vancouver Thunderbirds Head Coach, Dean Murten, added: “It’s exciting to reestablish the Ruth Hellerud-Brown Cup. Having four teams will provide the athletes and coaches with strong, quality opposition.”
