BC Rugby wishes to congratulate Ebb Tide Rugby Club on celebrating its 50th Anniversary this month!
The Ebb Tide Rugby Club is hosting a special weekend to commemorate the anniversary, including a 50th Anniversary banquet on the evening of Saturday, October 15.
The Victoria-based Club has also produced a special 50th Anniversary Book for the occasion, which will be on sale at the events throughout the weekend.
All of us at BC Rugby wish to congratulate Ebb Tide Rugby Club on such a remarkable achievement.
CELEBRATING 50 YEARS OF EBB TIDE RUGBY CLUB
The Ebb Tide Rugby Club played its first match in October 1972 against Japanese side Wak Wak of Osaka, who were visiting BC that Fall, after Bob Hutchinson wrote to all past Crimson Tide players asking if they were interested in forming an over-40s team to play against the touring side.
After an overwhelming response, over 30 players were on hand to play against Wak Wak. This showed there was an appetite for over-40s Rugby in Victoria!
The Club moved from strength to strength and has represented Rugby in BC on numerous overseas tours throughout the years, including on trips to Japan (2006), New Zealand (2009) and France (2012). The Club planned on touring Japan again in 2021 but had to postpone due to the global pandemic.
Alongside its partners at the Cascadia Masters Rugby Union, Ebb Tide Rugby Club has been instrumental in ensuring Masters Law variations have now been codified with both World Rugby and Rugby Canada – allowing Masters Rugby to thrive not just in BC, but the Pacific North West.
HOW THE CLUB IS CELEBRATING
Ebb Tide Rugby Club has a huge celebration weekend planned for its 50th anniversary. Beginning on Friday, October 14, there will be a player-only social beginning at 7:00pm at at McCall’s Sequoia Centre, 4665 Falaise Drive.
This will offer an opportunity for active and former members as well as “friends” of Ebb Tide from other Cascadia Masters Rugby Union clubs to share some cheer and trade stories.
On Saturday, October 15, Pacific Northwest Over 40s Rugby will be played on Wallace Field at the University of Victoria. There will then be a special 50th Anniversary Banquet on Saturday evening for players, partners, and other friends of the Ebb Tide Rugby Club at The Four Points by Sheraton in Langford – 829 McCallum Road (250-474-6063).

About Masters Rugby
Masters Rugby is a format traditionally played by players 35+ years or older. It is a social form of contact Rugby for those who maybe cannot train or play as hard as they used to!
Masters is centred around the core values and traditions of contact Rugby, often pitting old friends and foes against each other. Many Masters teams tour both nationally and internationally, making bonds that last a lifetime across generations.
Masters allows both seasoned players and newbies an opportunity to bond over fond memories while playing the sport they love most.
