Tia Jordo’s try in the final seconds proved to be a winner as the UBC Thunderbirds defeated the Victoria Vikes, 20-15, in the fifth-place game at the 2022 U SPORTS Women’s Rugby Championship on Sunday, November 6.
UBC’s tries were scored in the seventh, 19th and 80th minutes by Rachel Smith, Savannah Bauder, and Jordo, respectively, while Summer Blackmore responded in the 29th minute and Lucie Romeo in the 49th and 77th minutes in a losing cause for Victoria.
With this win, UBC ends their season with an overall regular and post-season record of 8-1-1, while Victoria finishes with a 5-4-1 record in 2022.

Semi-Final: UBC Thunderbirds 34-12 Acadia Axewomen
In their earlier consolation semi-final on November 4, six different UBC student-athletes scored tries during the Thunderbirds’ 34-12 victory over the Acadia Axewomen.
UBC’s tries were scored in the 20th, 23rd, 35th, 44th, 60th and 70th minutes by Shoshanah Seumanutafa, Rachel Smith, Mia Bullock, Savannah Bauder, Jordan McLeod, and Kristin Johnson, respectively, while Juliette Matsukubo (15th minute) and Danielle Wisen (56th minute) replied in a losing cause for Acadia.
Semi-Final: UVIC Vikes 20-5 University of Prince Edward Island
Lucie Romeo struck twice for Victoria in the first half to push the Vikes over UPEI, 20-5, in their consolation semi-final on November 4.
Victoria’s tries were scored in the 10th, 15th, 30th, and 47th minutes by Lucie Romeo (2), Mariam Ibrahim, and Carissa Norsten, respectively, while Emma MacLean replied in the 35th minute in a losing cause for UPEI.
Quarter-Final: UBC Thunderbirds 25-26 Guelph Gryphons
Kennedy Feasby’s try in the final minute of play proved to be the difference-maker as the #6 seeds Guelph Gryphons defeated the #3 seeds UBC Thunderbirds in comeback fashion, 26-25, in their quarter-final game on November 2.
Guelph’s tries were scored in the 20th, 41st, 58th and 69th minute by Kennedy Feasby (2), Shoshauna Gauvin, and Brianna Martey, respectively, while Florence Symonds (3rd minute), Mia Bullock (13 and 26th minutes), Kally King (44th minute), and Savannah Bauder (65th minute) replied in a losing cause for the Thunderbirds.
With this win, Guelph advances to play Laval on Friday, November 4 at 5:00pmPT in the semi-finals.
Quarter-Final: Queen’s Gaels 13-10 UVIC Vikes
Lizzie Gibson’s penalty goal with no time left on the clock proved to be a winner as the Queen’s Gaels defeated the Victoria Vikes, 13-10, in their quarter-final game.
Queen’s points were scored in the 14th, 48th, and 70th minutes by Gibson with two penalty goals and Maggie Banks with the try, while Lucie Romeo replied with two tries in the Vikes’ effort.
With this win, Queen’s advances to play Ottawa on Friday, November 4 at 7:00pm PT at Centennial Stadium.
